Setting Up Your IRS Account

Have you ever had a question for the IRS?
Wondered the status of your refund?
Not sure if they received your tax payment?
Received an IRS notice and needed more details?
Not sure how much your stimulus payment was?

If you’ve experienced any of these situations, you know how difficult it can be to get in touch with someone at the IRS. But, the IRS has launched a new tool where you can access all of this information to answer your questions by simply setting up an online account at IRS.gov. If you run into problems with the IRS or just want easy access to your account information, we recommend setting up an account to help navigate you through the process.

Information You Can Find On Your IRS Online Account

  • Stimulus & Economic Impact Payments – Record of any stimulus payments you may have received.
  • Tax Payment History – A record of amounts due, estimated tax payments made, and scheduled payments.
  • Authorization – The ability to view and approve authorization requests from your tax professional.
  • Adjusted Gross Income – Depending on how you file your taxes, you or your preparer may need your AGI.
  • Notices – Digital copies of select letters or notices from the IRS.
  • Contact Information – Ensure the address that the IRS has on file for you is correct and sign up for paperless for certain IRS notices.
  • Online Payments – View payment options, create payment plans, and make secure payments online.
  • Tax Records – View key data from your most recent tax returns and request transcripts.

How To Setup An Account

If you don’t have an account, don’t worry, it only takes a couple of minutes, and then you’ll have access to all of your tax information in one place. The IRS has partnered with ID.me to provide identity verification to create your account. To make sure sign up goes smoothly, you’ll need to have the following information handy:

  • Full Name of the Taxpayer
  • Email Address
  • Birth Date
  • Social Security Number
  • Mailing Address
  • Picture ID (Driver’s License, Passport, State ID)

During the account verification process, be sure to have access to a smartphone connected to the internet. You can also use a computer, but a smartphone will be required for some tasks. You’ll be asked to verify your identity via email, text message, taking a picture of your ID, and even taking a selfie. Once your identity is verified, you’ll be all set to access your IRS account. ID.me has also provided this short video with additional helpful tips.
