Cybersecurity: One Size Doesn't Fit All

Custom Cybersecurity Solutions for the Education Sector

In today’s digital world, schools, colleges, and universities have become major targets for cybercriminals. In fact, in 2024, attacks on educational institutions accounted for 21% of all reported cybersecurity incidents. The education sector was hit particularly hard, facing a wide range of threats, from credential theft and remote management tool (RMM) abuse to fake software updates hiding malicious code.

The Growing Cybersecurity Challenges in Education

Cybercriminals continue to evolve their tactics, and educational institutions often face unique challenges due to large networks, multiple access points, and varying levels of user awareness. Below are some of the most significant threats currently facing the education industry:

  • Malicious Scripts: Detected in 24% of attacks, malicious scripts remain the top attack method targeting the education sector. These scripts can steal data, install malware, or give attackers remote access to systems.
  • RMM Tool Abuse: Attackers frequently exploit legitimate Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) tools to gain access to school networks. Through spearphishing campaigns, they pose as trusted IT sources, sending RMM updates or components. Once inside, they can manipulate systems or gather sensitive information. By identifying which RMM platforms an institution uses, attackers can launch more targeted and effective attacks.
  • Chromeloader Threats: Around 70% of all infostealer detections within education were linked to Chromeloader, a particularly persistent threat that disguises itself as a browser extension or software update. Once installed, it can exfiltrate data and compromise user accounts.

Protecting Educational Institutions from Cyber Threats

To defend against these evolving attacks, schools and universities must take a proactive approach to cybersecurity. Staying current on new risks, understanding how threats occur, and implementing customized cybersecurity solutions can make all the difference.

Recommended best practices include:

  • Conducting regular network security assessments
  • Keeping software and RMM tools updated and verified
  • Providing cybersecurity training for faculty, staff, and students
  • Partnering with a trusted cybersecurity provider for tailored protection
